Coachella 2012 Series - Part I

This year, my buddies and I decided to embark on a trip to the ~~Hipster~~ musical Mecca that is Coachella. My buddy Mike from over at Past The Bar is going to be documenting the process from start to finish - from buying tickets to a concert a year out and having no idea who is performing, to having a fantasy draft to guess the artists performing, the announcement of the 2012 acts performing, housing arrangements, and the trip itself. Buckle up - its going to be quite the journey! Part I of the madness covering the epic Fantasy Draft is after the jump - all for your reading enjoyment!

FANTASY COACHELLA

On April 13 thousands of hipsters, music aficionados, and fans of simply having a good time will caravan into the California desert for three days of eclectic music (indie, rock, hip-hip, electronic, r&B, reggae, and everything in between), art, beer, and interesting people watching; including people in face paint, headdresses, neon, jean shorts, bathing suits, skinny jeans, floppy hats, and 80s/90s ironic (awesome if you ask me) basketball jerseys.

This will be my fourth consecutive Coachella Festival. Each year is an incredible unique fun experience. I mean…where else can you be in a giant tent dancing and jumping up and down like a madman to Afrojack when what do you see but Sir Paul McCartney and Usher together fist pumping along. Needless to say, Coachella is always one of my highlights of the year. But…what do Coachella

fans do the rest of the year? (Besides check Pitchfork, drink PBR, and complain that their previously favorite artists now suck because they've become too popular). Or worse…what do those Coachella fans who sat online today for two-hours starring at the Standby squares of death only to come up empty handed do to bide the time before next year's Coachella?

Introducing the Fantasy Coachella game.

Fantasy sports players are sports nerds. Hipsters are music nerds. So embrace your inner Lewis, Gilbert, and Booger and nerd out with me for a moment. Based on my knowledge and the infinite wisdom of Google, this is the first and only Coachella Fantasy League/Draft ever. As of January 2012, I've googled and come up with nothing similar, which is not all that surprising as sometimes I like to think of myself as the Steve Jobs of time-wasting. This year tickets for Coachella initially went on sale in June 2011, despite the fact that the event was still 10 months away and not a single artist had been announced. Despite not having any guarantees about the lineup, with the possibility of facing three days in the desert with Kesha, Rebecca Black, Creed, Nickelback, the Jonas Brothers, Mr. Mcgibblets, and the Wiggles, my group of friends and I intrepidly plopped down the roughly $300 necessary to guarantee our spots. But we had faith in the Coachella desert music gods. Speculation of who might fill the bill spread faster than an STD through the Jersey Shore house (ya that's played out..but it was too easy) as blogs rushed to name their projected headliners and fake "official" lineups were "leaked." The thing was, no one knew for sure and the Coachella organizers were not giving away any tips as there wasn't even any announcement of when to expect to hear what lineup we had paid $300 for. An idea was born. Fantasy Coachella.

Before I get into the details, the true purpose of Fantasy Coachella is simply an excuse to get together with friends. As people get older and busier with life it is common for the gap between in-person or sit-down visits between friends to grow. Luckily for me, my core group of friends have remained extremely tight and still see each other in person quite frequently, save our friends who have migrated East to Chicago and Atlanta, and far east all the way to Albania. But even if you are blessed to be able to see your good friends often, it's also nice to come up with other ceremonial events like the Coachella Draft to change the regularly scheduled programming of meeting up to always go to the same restaurant/bar/fill in the blank. Though the actual Coachella Festival is the real headliner, the Coachella fantasy draft is a great opening ceremony. As Bill Simmons once wrote, "The trick is to find dumb reasons to get together."

BACKGROUND

Now lets start with some basic explanations of fantasy sports for those of you new to the program. Go ahead and close the flip phone and log out of myspace because it's time for an elementary education in pop culture and fun.

Fantasy Football is a game where participants act as owners to build a team that competes against other fantasy owners based on the statistics generated by the real individual players of that particular sport….Or as some have called it…the Dungeons and Dragons of the jock community. And you're getting this from a true junkie, though honestly not a particularly successful one, with no Mark Renton redemption in sight. Each year I generally have about three fantasy football teams, two basketball, two baseball, one hockey, and I've even dabbled in Soccer (EPL, Champions League, and MLS), Nascar, etc. Some have decent amounts of money wagered on them, some are just for fun with friends, some are out of curiosity and boredom. Fantasy sports are now a billion dollar industry with millions playing across the globe. They have their very own language; Rotisserie, Head-to-Head, Snake, Auction, etc. and are also focused around the sports centric statistics lingo (WHIP, A/T, etc.).

First you pick your team name, which generally leads to competitors trying to outwit each other with clever/funny/suggestive/inappropriate plays on words, names, or terms relating to the sport. Of course there are always a handful of lazy unimaginative people who just use their last name, or have some generic, My Fantasy Team, LA Ballers, etc. You shouldn't be friends with those people. But anyway…the next big step in any fantasy league (and many would argue the most fun) is the Fantasy Draft.

In the draft each player selects their team, via a standard draft where owners each take turns selecting players in some predetermined order (most use some automatic/lottery system to get a random order like picking out of a hat, or go based on the standings from the previous year or make draft order selection a whole other event - like a foot race, chug off, blindly selecting a horse in a race, or even picking random children in a sack race as exhibited in The League). There are also auction value drafts, but those will be ignored for the purposes of theCoachella Draft (for now!). Once your team is selected, the final step is the management of the roster throughout the season (including adding or dropping free agents, playing players on your roster based on health/matchups/irrational hunches/etc, trades, criticizing trades, criticizing the commissioner, trash talking, and a generally absurd amount of time mocking one another - for those more curious, check out The League on FX). You then compete against the other teams to make the playoffs and eventually win the championship.

One quick trip over the Coachella Message Boards or music blogs and one can began to see the parallels. Countless posts outlining people's dream Coachella line-up, posts extolling the virtues of one artist while fifty other people comment about how terrible the artist is. You're about as unlikely to see a musical opinion go unquestioned as you are to see indifferent graffiti (See Demetri Martin, "I think graffiti is the most passionate literature there is. It's always like, 'Bush sucks. U2 Rules.' I wanna make indifferent graffiti. 'Toy Story 2 was OK.' 'I like Gina as a friend, but I'm not sure about taking things further.' 'This is a bridge.'"). There are characters like Monklish who is one of the Coachella speculation gurus in the vein of ESPN's fantasy expert Matthew Berry. They try to examine artists tour schedules, supposed Coachella rules and contract stipulations that artists can't play within 100 miles ofCoachella or in LA within 100 days of the festival, when artists are releasing new albums, if the artists have playedCoachella before (apparently only 22 acts have made multiple Coachella appearances prior to this year), who is up and coming, who is overdue, and the new twist this year of who will agree to play two consecutive weekends. But at the end of the day…on paper you might think you have the best team/most possible lineup…but you never really know til it all plays out.

HOW TO PLAY

Before the Draft, listen to music. That's not too hard is it?! But really the nice thing is there really isn't much pre-draft preparation to do. Sure it would be great to find your Victor Cruz, your The Weeknd…who appeared to just come out of nowhere and dominate making you look like a genius (accidental or not). However, unlike professional sports leagues where each league has a limited talent pool with athletes that you know will be in play to research and select from, the music pool is basically limitless. If the Festival organizers want, they could roll out Mili Vanilli, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Shabba Ranks, and Sisqo. Or they could go with an obscure Tuareg singer, an Australian didgeridoo player, and S.Mouse…and that wouldn't even really surprise me. And just as in Fantasy sports, while there might be some selections that seem to be locks…you never know (Just ask Jamaal Charles owners how that worked out for them this year). Every year the message boards seem to be teeming with fans calling for a Daft Punk performance, hasn't happened since I've been attending. So there's not a ton to do…other than have fun with it. You know there's gonna be rock, some big DJs, and some hip-hop. If you wish to educate yourself a little though, check out previous lineups, check out the music blogs and magazines (see above with the fake line-ups and prognosticators)…see who the big names are and who appears to be up and coming…and just keep an ear open to see who you like.

Now…you've gathered somewhere with a group of good friends, all of whom should be planning on actually attending the festival. Sure, you could just do the draft for fun…but come on…who drafts a fantasy football player then never watches any football? Or maybe you and your friends are just compulsive gamblers…whatever works. There are probably some cocktails flowing…some craft beer, maybe some red wine, round of tequila shots, or who knows…dare I say some PBR? Choose a Commissioner to be in charge. They can maintain the draft board or list of who has been selected and keep the official record…since there is no established pool of players like in football…this has to be done manually somehow. Figure out how many rounds you want to go…there are a ton of bands at Coachella…but you can also probably sit and name random bands/artists for a pretty good amount of time. 25-50 is a good aim. Establish a draft order…draw names out of a hat, guess a number, play Mario Kart, do a Cowboy-Indian-Bear tournament, or figure something else out. Establish a time limit per pick. You want things to move along quickly. Impose penalties for those who don't pick within the designated time or who pick an artist who has already been selected. Our group imposed drink punishments as well as allowing the rest of the group to select for the person who has blown their turn (must be an artist who is alive AND theoretically capable of appearing…in other words sure, your Uncle Larry COULD perform on his washboard at Coachella…but it has to be a "generally known" artist). This is how one of our buddies ended up with Sisqo on his Fantasy Coachella team. But who knows…the Thong Song would be hipsterishly ironic, no? We also started making up rules as we got into the later rounds, like you couldn't select a band that started with the same letter as your name, etc. Then go around making your selections until all the rounds are done…or everyone has run out of picks/suggestions. We decided to keep it simple and assign 1 Point to every correct artist to appear on the official Coachella line-up and 3 points for naming one of the three headliners. You could also try to guess what day or what stage for extra points…or decide on points for various levels of headlining since there are multiple stages, or give points for correctly guessing the artist who opens, or any other scoring system you see fit. You could even take things further and select what songs they will play at the festival so that the game can continue...but who wants to monitor that...put the pen and paper down and enjoy the music. Finally, you can come up with some sort of wager or prize if you see fit. Our group has decided that the winner will have a drink bought for them by every other player each day of the festival and that whoever comes in last will also have to buy a drink for each player each day of the festival…including an extra one for the winner (Mainly because at the end of our draft and upon reading our rosters…everyone was uncertain they won, but felt confident they weren't the worst).

Our Commissioner is currently on leave from her Commissioner duties out in Houston and San Diego, so we haven't seen the draft board to determine points now that the line-up is out…but I'll update when we know!

At the end of the day, it's all just about having a good time with some friends. Whether it's five people in a living room or 34,982,304 out in the desert….see you all at Coachella 2012!

If you were one of the many people who downloaded and loved the Cool Kids' Gone Fishing and Tackle Box mixtapes, then you should be pretty familiar with singer 10ille (pronounced Tennille). She appeared on both of those projects along with Sir Michael Rocks' solo mixtape debut, The Rocks Report, and she's worked with buzzing Detroit spitter Boldy James. But in the case of this post, the focus is solely on 10ille through her new Candy Jams. S-Double Shop

This past weekend while up in Santa Barbara, I finally had a chance to check out the S-Double pop-up shop with my buddy D-Russ. Located in the back of Richie's Barbershop in Montecito, the spot is the definition of simple, sleek, modern, and minimalist. After navigating your way through a very high end vintage-looking ~~beauty~~ barber shop, you'll see a door in the back with the iconic S-Double logo. Upon entering, you'll find a cozy boutique with the walls lined with classic black & white surf photo's, in addition to Shawn Stussy's hand-shaped boards (available for sale). The small desk in the back has a sampling of goods for purchase (A couple t-shirts, hoodies, and hats), and that's really it. If you ever find yourself in the Santa Barbara area - I highly recommend a brief stop.

So instead of doing a full on recap and due to my brief discussion/debate I had with some co-workers instead of voicing my thoughts or problems with the Grammy's I thought I'd have my good buddy Bob do the talking for me. All the action was online last night. Twitter was aflare. If you think the Grammy ratings spiked because of the show, you probably believe CDs are ripe for a comeback. The bottom line is we all like to participate. And the more mass the event, the more we're drawn to it. Used to be you could miss the Grammys, but now you'd be unable to discuss Nicki Minaj's train-wreck if you did.

Yes, there are diehard fans tuning in to see their favorites, but most of us would rather sit in judgment of those doing their best to impress. You might think J. Lo and Tyler are the judges, but that's wrong. We are. Always have been, but now more than ever. The public is in control. Didn't we learn that with SOPA?

The show was too boring to watch in real time. But playing with my lovers and haters on Twitter was incredibly entertaining. We were all on the other side of the glass, having a private conversation that those on screen were not clued into, to their detriment.

I mean what kind of calamity was this, where seemingly half the acts lip-synched and it was a smorgasbord of genres. It was pure America, where everybody believes if they just work hard enough, they can become rich and famous and leave the rest of us behind.

Wrong.

So what did we learn?

1. Have a social media presence. Just like Twitter and Facebook drove up the Grammy ratings to 1984 levels, their second best ever, interacting where your fans are will enhance your career.

2. Ignore the haters. They come with the territory. If you're too afraid to be beaten up online, close your account, don't play, go to your psychiatrist and cry. Behind a cloak of anonymity, without knowing the people they're tearing down, the hoi polloi is vicious. If you take it personally, you've missed the point. See it as jealousy. The want what you've got, even if you don't think what you possess is so damn hot. They're angry where they're at and you're the scapegoat. Laugh about it.

3. Make it easy. If the Grammys had been simulcast throughout the U.S. the ratings would have been even higher. I felt left out during the east coast feed. My e-mail was aflutter, Tweetdeck was raging, and I couldn't play. Furthermore, the whole damn world's a spoiler alert. We live online. If you think people can avoid the results, you live in a vacuum.

4. Don't put money first. That's why CBS insisted on tape delay. Believing only during prime time could they charge premium prices for advertising. It's all about the franchise. Build it and they will come. Do you think advertisers complain that the Super Bowl is aired in the afternoon on the west coast and they want a discount? Of course not! They know everybody's tuned in.

5. There are a limited number of franchises. There's only one Grammys and one Oscars. Forget about competition, build it and buff it and they will come. The Grammys should add another event. Maybe a nomination special wherein what the public votes for gets a chance at winning a Grammy. Instead of being beholden to CBS, the Grammys should pull the ancient TV network into the future. Music leads online, don't expect a TV network worried about theft of its content to get it. The more viewers you've got, the more money you've got.

6. All publicity is not good publicity. That guy in Foster The People looked like a dork and sang even worse, I felt positively towards the act before, now I can see their talent is limited. As for Adam Levine... If you can't sing, stay off the stage.

7. Fight for your right to do it your way. The Civil Wars got a minute, but doing their own song acoustically paid more dividends than those garnered by anybody playing by the rules, agreeing to do a medley with an act they had little in common with, if anything at all.

8. Less is more. Who made a bigger impression last night, Adele or Nicki Minaj? Who sold more records? It's about music. It goes in the ears, not the eyes.

The old paradigm is gone. History. Public policy may still be driven by corporations, but entertainment is owned by the public. If you think you're above the audience, you're cruisin' for a bruisin'.

I had a great time watching the Grammys last night.

But it wasn't the show.

But the behind the scenes conversation. Not with some dressed up airhead interviewing celebs spouting vapidities, but with the vast unwashed online. Some hating, some loving, some with perceptive insight and all spreading the word, retweeting thoughts to the farthest reaches of the Internet, to the point where no one was unaware of what was happening at the Grammys.

And this is a good thing.

Seeing new music releases have been super slow thought I'd hit you with this bad boy. I love behind the scenes especially studio sessions. Wiz has been doing this Day Today thing for a hot minute and I think it has been one of the reason he's grown such a huge following people always want to see what there favorite artist is doing behind the scenes. Aside from the usual Gin & Weed you can see guest appearances by Tyler of Odd Future, Pharell & TGOD crew. This is actually pretty funny and entertaining. Enjoy!

In the spirit of getting back into the roots of Hip Hop (feestyles) I figured I'd hit you with this somewhat old freestyle from the TGOD leader himself, Wiz. In my eyes good music comes few and far between its also so subjective and everyone isn't going to love everything I post. Here is the thing why are we judging people's music because they talk about females, or they're soft becuase ___, or he spits about this and that and I can't relate? I'm guilty of this most recently with Rick Ross. Although I can't relate to what he talks about he definitely makes good music. All these points are important but at the end of the day isn't music made for ultimately the sound or feeling you get from the sound? Then if you can relate its just a bonus.... I had a really good convo with my cousin when I went back to Ohio and eventually I will post some of his points, they were amazing points and if we put music into perspective and really think about its purpose we'd stop judging it over things that are somewhat irrelevant. Good music is good music. That rant had nothing to do with this post aside from the fact that I think some of the music that has been coming out lately hasn't been the best all around. What I like about this site is I get to post things I like and think are quality tracks you should check out. You may like Lil B, but I can't appreciate his music. That will be the only jab I'll throw on here. I'd like to focus on the good rather then the bad. This beat is dope and Wiz spits some nice bars. He's came a long way! Enjoy!

Raif Adelberg Interview

Raif Adelberg is back on the scene in a major way - designing and constructing custom pieces from deadstock hand knit cowhichan sweaters for a new collaboration project. Raif has kept busy since founding Made Magazine with projects such as the modern boutique 24, the world renowned luxury store Richard Kidd, Deadboys Clubhouse and his own hand knit cashmere collection Raif Adelberg.

The collection was released late 2011 - but that's not the reason for the post - I was just watching this interview he did with Stussy again (posted after the jump) - and felt like it needed to be shared. This is one of those dudes that has aged within the culture - and is continuing to pump out quality products. I like when the owners and designers behind brands and movements allow their product to grow with their supporters - and not pigeon-hole their own product to a particular demographic. When putting together's yesterday's post on those shades from 9Five, the 2Three's, I couldn't help but be reminded of the brand Mike23 (Taking cues the GOAT as well - both with name and cement inspired colorways). These glasses were featured on OSTT back in 2007, and at that time - they were not yet commercially available. The WayFresher's eventual release was held up to the C&D that Jordan Brand hit them with (Nike/Jordan Brand don't give much leeway when it comes to heavy reliance on His Airness' likeness) - but come to find out, you can still purchase Mike23's "WayFresher" sunglasses today! There is more to these glasses than a classic silhouette and dope print - these of the upmost quality.

"... a set of premium sunglasses that’s hand crafted in Japan featuring the infamous crackle pattern. To construct the Mike acetate frames a process of over 40 days and 100 craftsmen are needed. The construction process starts where several sheets of acetate are hand cut to size one at a time and over a period of six hours are heated to 150 degrees layer by layer. At this time a craftsman hand molds and shapes into a curved face-forming shape. After a cooling period, the shapes are than hand craved and are polished in a tumbling process over a two week period. Yuna is an independent Malaysian singer-songwriter. She began writing her own songs when she was 14 years old, and her first performance of her own songs was at the age of 19, after she learned how to play guitar. She has performed in numerous acoustic shows and events in many parts of Malaysia since 2006.

She was eventually discovered in the US by the Indie-Pop record label and management company. Apparently the old/used denim is cut and broken down, then blended with new organic cotton, to create a unique pair of 'green' (as in environmentally friendly) denim. What I love the most about being the guy who's into music and doing the website thing is that people often come to me to tell me about new artist - some I listen to, some I don't, some I love... What's even cooler is when I'm tired of listening to all the music I have and no one is posting anything good I get a email with a link to these guys music. Specifically the song up above which is a remix to one of the more notable Biggie songs. Before I go into anymore I want to clarify the title.

When I think it's appropriate to give someone more love then normal or I see or hear something that other mainstream sites aren't all posting at the same time I give it the OSTT stamp. The Reach is actually the name of the Aer's new album which is what I'm sharing with you in addition to the "Story to Tell" track above. The Fresh Aer Movement is basically, well you get it by now and I dig it every artist has a phrase or movement now a days and I dig theirs. You can check out their website to catch up on all the remixes and videos they've done. Below I'll also provide a link to the album - I know your thinking wow it's on iTunes should he be giving a link out? Well put it this way they are giving links out and at this stage I think it's better to give it to you guys to get a feel for who they are "awareness" people. Then if you like go out and support!

Overall I really like these guys they aren't trying to come out and be another Mac Miller, MGK, Asher Roth etc... they have a unique sound and its a crossbreed between Hip Hop & Pop sometimes I confuse myself with genres but you get what I'm saying. These guys could do magic in the future, they just need the right ears and timing. If you like the song above you really won't be disappointed in the album.

Last but not least thanks to Emma who shot the links my way. Also seeing this site is mainly based on fashion & lifestyle I figured I'd throw this cool fact in one of these guys brothers also owns a line of backpacks called George Guest. Head over there to check them out. Pretty pricey but nice high-end looking backpacks. Seems like that family isn't doing too bad for themselves. ENJOY!

Rather than linking to all of the unsuccessful ventures in the past, I'll link to the one (well, technically, two) rapper led brands that have turned out successful product, in my opinion. Trukfit, Lil Wayne's latest venture, is obviously taking its cues from 1/2 the brains behind the successful previous rapper lead endeavor, but is being built for more 'mass appeal' with an apparent deal with 'shopping mall favorite' Zumiez already in place, rather than catering to the streetwear/fashion elite. I make absolutely no attempt to hide this at all : S-Double is one of my favorite brands out right now. Shawn Stussy, the originator of what you have come to know as Streetwear, couldn't be bothered about setting or following trends, building up or promoting his product releases, or even releasing product in conjunction with the seasons - he drops product when the quality and design is up to par, and when its ready to purchased. If you happen to check the site/are in the know of the drop - good for you, purchase some great stuff. If not, no sweat. My man has made millions off the company that now only bears his surname - this time around, he's in for the fun, and the love. Check the S-Double site now for the goods available for purchase (yes - the boards we previously mentioned are now available online for purchase).

Seriously though - In case you aren't buying the fact that he is letting the product speak for itself, this is how the shirt above is described on the website - looks eerily similar to a write-up I'd typically do for this site - not what you'd expect from a salesman trying to get you to buy his product - but that's how S-Double rolls:

Supreme London

I'm currently out traveling in Europe - and my current stop brought me to London for the weekend. Aside from checking out the obvious sites (Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Parliament Building, Westminster Abbey, etc) - I had to stop by London's new must-see attraction - Europe's first Supreme flagship store. The store has about what you've come to expect from Supreme - minimalist design featuring Skateboards hanging on the wall, along with Supreme, Thrasher, Chocolate, and Girl gear spread throughout the store. Art fans get a special treat as Mark Gonzales provided drawings and sculptures (one located on the bottom floor, one hanging from the top) As you'd expect, selection of product was also at a minimum - so head there closer to a drop date if you want to cop some of the premier pieces, as they go just as quickly here as they do in LA, NY, and Japan.

Dope picture, right? Vivid imagery. Great colors. Interesting subject (Fresh sushi!). I was shocked to learn that these series of what appear to be photographs are in fact a set of paintings done by none other than famed artist Diego Gravense (check some of his other works here).

Yes! In case this is the only site you frequent and weren't aware a lot of sites are starting to do these unique mixes and I'm all for them! I'm also all for if this is the only site you frequent haha jk. But this is what I was sort of trying to accomplish with the OSTT series but I'm just not experienced in mixing. Maybe Prince my blog partner can get his buddy DJ Rell to do a couple unique mixes for the site in addition to the OSTT Volumes. This one is provided by Life + Times, so shouts to them! What I don't like is that all the tracks are blended into one, but on the other hand it's genius to do it this way because then people will listen to it all the way through which is the preferred way to listen to music. Shifting gears to something much more important... As you all may know Jay-Z & Beyonce gave birth to a baby girl yesterday - Blue Ivy Carter. Jay blesses us with this track to show his love for his little one, produced by none other then Pharell. Fitting he links up with Skateboard for the first track dedicated to his daughter. I love it! Once you have a kid your focus and priorities seem to shift I wish the Carter's the best. Still crazy to think Jay rented out the whole hospital for 1.4 while Beyonce gave birth. Lastly, if that isn't a celebrity name "Blue Ivy" not sure what is. Enjoy!

Ahh! Beefing is alive and well! So eventually I plan on getting to a point to where I stop venting my thoughts about music on twitter (@Hop_OSTT - excuse the shameless plug) and just putting my thoughts on here. It just bugs me when people discount a beef because they think someone is soft... I could be overreacting and people are just joking to joke which is perfectly fine. But I think this is the best thing to happen to music outside of the Weeknd & Rick Ross in a good minute or should I say the best beef in some time if it continues. Think about it you have two of today's greatest MC's going back and forth on the same topics fans dislike about rappers now a days. Lyrically we're getting some top notch music!

I had a convo with my sister, yes my sister. Before I go any further my sister is a huge Lonnie Lynn fan has all his CD's, been to his concert every time he comes through LA and has also read his book. She argues she knows him because she touched his hand and he said what's up but I'm not counting that.... So her POV is some what biased but she claims maybe its over Serena?! Which kind of sort of makes sense but for this beef I hope that's not the basis for the battle or that would be the worse, for reasons I won't discuss LOL. Anyways the reason I brought my sister into this discussion is because I was trying to figure out why Common would even start to go down that road? Common who will go down as a legend can't really gain anything from this can he? I can literally name a few reason why I think (Good vs YMCMB, Serena, Common never getting the shine he deserves and Drake coming in the game cocky, Drake singing but trying to act hard, etc etc). At the end of the day some could argue Common should have just left it alone because his legacy is bigger then that, but me? I think its great, I'd rather listen to them beef than hear 90% of the music that comes out today. What are your thoughts? Who is winning so far? Who's side are you on? Either way enjoy! We don't often get to see any GOOD (no pun) battles anymore so get your popcorn!

I for one did not know that the CB34's had been re-released, did you? Good news - they are available online at Footaction now. I remember the classic Black/Purple colorway from the 90's, but these top the original's, in this humple man's opinion. I think these fall in line with the Air Max 95's - too bulky to really wear with jeans or to use for perforance wear (i.e. I'm not ballin' in these, and I'm not going for run's in the AM95's) - but look great with a pair of shorts. These are a little more expensive than when the originally dropped, but that's life.

Remember when your parents would tell you to think before you speak? Yeah well for this one I decided to give it a full listen and consume all of the materials i.e. above video which is the making of, the Stay Schemin music video where you can catch Drake firing shots back at Common (which by the way I think would be great for music right now), speaking on the Kobe - Vanessa divorce situation and Ross' first visual off of Rich Forever. Now that I got that out I can finish my review which none of you really care about anyway ha!

First wanted to break down the title Rich Forever, which he explains, "I'm rich now so why can't I wish to be Rich Forever?" then he says, "I want my people to eat and have money forever side by side with me." I really understood that and thought that's what anyone would want there family and loved ones to be, set forever. Then there is the other aspect where in almost every song he talks about his wealth and saying things most of us will never or rarely get to see on a daily basis. Think of how many people actually ever get to see a Bugatti up close or even have the chance to sit inside of one? You have those same people running around screaming about Bugatti's... Its like a movement in music a lot of big time artist are jumping on the Rick Ross bandwagon and they are setting him up to be the Notorious Big of our generation.

Overall I thought this "street album" was really solid and indeed better then most peoples albums Ross is definitely special and when its all said and done will be remembered as one of the heavy hitting legends of hip hop. You can also tell a lot of the tracks on this album were meant for God Forgives, I Don't because he says it as if it was the title of the album throughout various tracks. One of my favorite songs on the album is "Party Heart" which is produced by Chuck English of the Cool Kids. By the way wonder if anyone would have ever thought Chuck English would produce a song for Rick Ross? I have a post coming up with a bunch of beats by Chuck that mans been working. Anyway be sure to check "Party Heart" out and tell me what you think when you see me. =)

At the end of the day these are merely my opinions and music is very subjective. Rappers rap about how they are living because its the easiest way to tell a story about what's real. I love music and its good to have so much of it on a daily basis but a curse as well but music is alive and well in '12. Think of how far Ross has came... 50 Cent was trying to ruin his career because he was a PO officer not speaking the real, I think 50 knew back then this guy could be something great so he tried to destroy him before he got hot. Somewhere in between when Ross came in and Diddy got a hold of him he figured out a style and lane to go in and he's mastered it. Much respect to Ross and enjoy this great piece of work.

I haven't heard much from this French artist, but apparently he has been in the scene for a bit. I for one was drawn to this Mario piece (click the picture to expand) - so many different things to focus your attention on, but I really like the juxtaposition between the image and the geometric background and the vivid use of colors. Domo comes through with this track over 2Pac's Temptations. I really like this guy! I'm not really a OFWGKTA fan but I do think a couple of their members have a lot of talent. I've heard a little bit of Earl but I will reserve my judgement until he's back home and releasing new music. Tyler has the best voice and that Goblin track is super fresh. I feel like if Domo and Tyler did more music in this zone they'd be two of the freshest MC's out. Enjoy!

Yessir! Not sure if people are still hating on this guy but if you are you should reconsider. Think of where he started.... okay now that you've done that think about this, most artist need to find a niche or a lane to go in to lock in a fan base and he has definitely done that with his sound.

The whole bass heavy stripper sound works its what people are excited for and in a label like YMCMB he is starting to make his name mean something. For example, Cory Gunz, Bow Wow, Lil Twist.... all artist under YMCMB who are in the same lane as Tyga but his music has moved him ahead of that pack. So lookout for Careless World dropping 1/24.

1. The Weeknd (Whole Trilogy) - No explanation needed - but damn - it's like a whole new genre - and each mixtape absolutely KILLED it. It's not music, its an experience.
2. Adele - 21 (This is my shit. Love this cd, start to finish, great work cd. Love the simplicity. Love her voice).
3. Kendrick Lamar - Section 80 (This project was crazy. I like his older stuff (the EP, OD, etc) a lot, but this Section 80 was on a whole new level).
4. Frank Ocean - Nostalgia/Ultra - Probably my 2nd most played cd of the year - I might have played it out though. If The Weeknd only released 1 project, I would have played that out too, but the 3 releases helped a lot.
5. Stic.Man - The Workout (this is so unbelievably underrated - most inspirational project released - and the first CD I'm going to listen to in the New Year as I go for a run to get my car I was too drunk to drive home last night. The fact he could make a project like this and have it NOT be corny is crazy - although Wifey insists it is corny - but she doesn't like The Weeknd, so her opinion doesn't count haha.
6. Drake - Take Care - Don't skip a single song on this cd, no need.
7. Dom Kennedy (The Real Dom Kennedy AND From The Westside with Love II) - I don't know why he isnt on more people's radar (outside the blogosphere) - I feel like he is built for success with his laid-back style.

8. Florence The Machine - Ceromonials (Don't judge, it's lowkey like a female The Weeknd)

9. Watch the Throne (I'm really surprised how well this project came together - they were super focused and stayed on topic on all the songs, great production, etc. Murder for Excellence > _________ )

10. Bad Meets Evil - (Just great to see lyricism be the emphasis of a well put together cd).

I thought Tyler the Creator's debut cd, Goblin, was good, but his mixtape (Bastard) was better IMO. I liked ASAP Rocky's debut mixtape, and is probably #11 on the list - but it makes me want to listen to old H-town stuff (Mike Jones, who?! Mike Jones!). Fabolous killed it this year with There is No Competition mixtape series. Speaking of No Competition, Crooked I and the HorseShoe gang have been putting in work lyrically, and Crook is stepping up his song making ability (Villian featuring Sally Anthony? One of my favorite songs of the year). Tyga put together THREE really solid projects (Black Thoughts 2, Well Done 2, and #bitchimtheshit). The main one I forgot was Danny Brown - XXX. He intrigues me a lot (no homo) - and that album got a lot of play from me, not because I can identify with ANY of it, because I don't mess with drugs or have suicidal thoughts, but something about it has me listening to it. Voice is bordering on annoying - but yeah, I can't finger the appeal. I think it's the realism - like, look at a picture of him, and his songs like XXX or Die like a Rockstar are more believable ha.

To be 100% honest - I haven't listened to the new Common cd yet (late pass - I'm sure its classic though) - and I never bought the Carter IV.

Don't know about you guys - but I'm really looking forward to see what 2012 has to offer musically! Maybe we'll do a most anticipated music post next - featuring projects like Detox and the return of Earl Sweatshirt....Oh, and support your boy SKILLZ and purchase his 2011 Rap Up (stream here).

American Apparel - Open Factory

Do you have one of those friends that seems to be anywhere and everywhere, doing everything? No? Allow me to introduce you to Mike. Concerts, Art Galleries, Sports games, pillow fights in downtown LA - he's there. He ~~should~~ WILL be updating the site from time to time sharing his adventures. Without further ado:

This post is a few months late, but on 11/11/11 I had the opportunity to check out American Apparel's “Open Factory,” program in which they showed how their employees manufactured AA organic cotton t-shirts from scratch. While American Apparel is mostly known for being the official uniform of the US hipster movement (and quite comfy), American Apparel is a great example of a business being successful and socially/environmentally conscious at the same time.

Instead of out-sourcing parts of their manufacturing, AA uses a vertical integration business model which means the entire process (from the yarn being sewn, to the dyeing, to the printing, and finally to the marketing/distribution) all takes place under one roof…locally with American workers. Having the entire manufacturing process contained in-house means that AA has direct control over their environmental footprint, instead of out-sourcing work and turning a blind-eye to waste disposal and pollution which may go un-checked in third-world countries. In addition to championing various social causes, AA also pays living wages to their workers, which means you're investing in your community the next time you pick up some sweet neon pink tights and green leggings.

So I had a full night to listen to this and I probably listened to it all the way through about 8 times and each time I heard something different. My favorite album cover and probably my favorite album out of the series. If you haven't heard anything from him yet head on over to the-weeknd.com and do you self a favor. I will say this I heard a few songs from Abel before he became the Weeknd and his songs were very different so somewhere along the road he or someone else told him to sing in a higher pitch (because he didn't back then) and his production sky rocketed. These beats are so original and different, they make you think, they're sharp sounds with deep percussion.... I don't know how else to describe this sound. I may sound like I'm over-hyping this guys but he is something special for music. Sometimes we get so much music we become spoiled or we look for whats next rather then enjoying and appreciating whats here. Or think about it this way there have been music legends in the past who were huge influential to the music game you think it could be safe to say the Weeknd will be someone when we get older we'll look back and say he changed the way music sounds and took electronic R&B to another level? Anyways enough fluff go check it out for your self....

Aside from being a pretty cool project, and my love for mandarin's in general - this specific collaboration hit close to home. Why you ask? Because Dave Eggers wrote the 1 book that I started and failed to finish - A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. I read a lot - and whether I love a book or despise it, and regardless of how long it takes - I finish it.. I can't even recall what it is about this book that prevented me to finish it - the Cancer portion hitting too close to home? The fact that it was so highly rated by the critics? The inherent sadness? - I don't know, but I'm tempted to pick it up and power threw off GP. Anyway - I digress. Purchase the shirt here.

I feel like I needed to give this project the proper post for a couple reasons...

1) I want to start with my back story behind how I found out who Asher Roth was... Most of you know my love for Pac Div and one of the main reasons I dig the Div is because of how much energy their shows have. I feel like when you see an artist live you grow a certain respect for them based on how they perform. Well I happened to see Asher and Pac Div at the same time in SLC, Utah and Asher had an amazing set, but it wasn't that that won me over it was about midway through his set and something I would've never expected from a Asher Roth concert happened. He came rolling out on a power wheel and played "Candy Rain" by Soul 4 Real and I was sold one of my favorite childhood songs and he made the rap set fun. To me he is like the more serious version of Eminem with a laid back style, it just works for me. If you want to catch Roth in concert your lucky because he will be in LA on 12/30 at the Viper Room in West Hollywood! I've already got my tickets, this show will be special because he's going to have a live band and I would bet money that Chuck English & Chip Tha Ripper (LA Residents) will be in attendance or atleast I hope. Not only will a live band be there with special guest but the tickets are super cheap and its a small environment so you can't go wrong. Cop tickets here.

2) If you've been in a cave and don't know about Blended Babies you need to come out these dudes are solid producers. When I heard they were doing a whole mixtape with Asher I was again sold. I feel like the sound works really well with Asher's style. They've done a lot of solid work but if you want to hear a instrumental beat tape from them head over to iTunes for the Shooter McGavin joint.

Now that I got all that out take a listen & download if you like I have a feeling you guys won't be disappointed. Plus anyone who names their mixtape after PBR & Jazz is a fan of mine. ENJOY!
